If you generate or dispose of hazardous lighting waste materials, we can assist you in reducing your environmental liability.  Lamps and ballasts may contain hazardous materials, such as mercury and PCBs that require proper management and disposal according to several federal and state regulations. We are dedicated to providing comprehensive services and ensuring environmental health and safety. You can save money, avoid potential health hazards and reduce your chance of liability by knowing more about your fluorescent lighting system.

EPSI can recycle any fluorescent or HID lamp regardless of whether the lamp tests hazardous.  Recycling separates the toxic substances (such as mercury) from the glass, aluminum, and other components.  All materials may be reused in manufacturing other products.  Mercury containing lamps are 95% by weight recyclable.  Lamps are transported to EPSI in original cardboard containers or containers supplied by EPSI.  Lamps are then gravity fed into demanufacturing equipment which separates lamp components.  Aluminum end caps are removed, mercury-containing phosphor is removed via vacuum, clean glass is transported to a covered container for further distribution to a glass recycling facility.

On-Site Mercury Retort
The lamp component separation process is a mechanical one with the vacuum system capturing all of the mercury and phosphor powder which is then retorted on site.

EPSI has developed the in-house capability to do on-site retorting with proprietary equipment designed to safely process fluorescent, HID and other lamps and reduce them to their basic components.  The unit separates and collects each lamp component for re-use in manufacturing and other commercial products.  In this unit, only glass, aluminum, other recyclable lamp products and pure recovered mercury leave the unit.  No other recovered component leaves the unit which will not pass the TCLP test.  No hazardous waste is generated.
